SDMAC FOUNDATION EXPANDS MILITARY VETERAN STUDENT OF THE YEAR SCHOLARSHIP TO CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS

SAN DIEGO, CA, April 24, 2018 – The San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC) Foundation today announced the expansion of the SDMAC Military Veteran Student of the Year academic scholarship to California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). SDMAC Foundation will award four scholarships valued at $2,500 each to Veterans enrolled as full-time students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines at CSUSM in the 2018 calendar year. The scholarship bridges the financial gap after the GI Bill expires by providing funds for students to complete the fifth year of college that is often required for STEM degrees.

“We are thrilled that SDMAC Foundation has expanded the Military Veteran Student of the Year Scholarship program to our university,” said Patricia Reily, Ed.D., Veterans Services Director at CSUSM. “CSUSM sees see Veteran students as future industry leaders and outstanding citizens. This scholarship supports our mission to help Veterans achieve their academic goals and places them one step closer to our vision for them to graduate with a diploma in one hand, and an excellent career opportunity in the other.”

“The expansion of the SDMAC Military Veteran Student of the Year Scholarship to CSUSM allows the program to positively impact more Veterans in our community,” said Pete Hedley, President of SDMAC Foundation. “We are pleased to collaborate with the nation’s most military friendly universities to help Veterans achieve their academic goals without incurring significant debt.”

The inaugural SDMAC Military Veteran Student of the Year academic scholarships were awarded in 2016 and 2017 to Veteran students at San Diego State University.

SDMAC Military Veteran Student of the Year Scholarship awardees must have a former rank of E1 to E9 and be honorably separated from the U.S. armed forces. They must be enrolled at the CSUSM as full-time students in STEM disciplines in the 2018 calendar year and have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 (or arithmetic equivalent). Financial need and community, or university service are considered.
